Twitter: "pointless babble" or peripheral awareness + social grooming?
What struck me as particularly interesting in this article was how the author referenced a study of Tweets where the creators of the study categorized the Tweets and ended up with a percentage for each of the Tweets that were “pointless babble,” “converstaional,” “self-promotional,” etc. The author then went on to counter the study by stating that the majority of utterances people make in face-to-face interactions are phrases that may be regarded as phatic communication.
